Yea I know what your thinking… I don’t need to set any goals Ill just put them in my head and make up some random dollar figure in my head and hope I get there. No No No that’s not how you set goals.. that’s how you set yourself up for failure.
So, please, whatever you do, DO NOT skip this very important step.
Lets begin..
“The strangest secret in the world is that you become what you think about.”
- Earl Nightingale.
This will most likely be one of the most important training lessons you will ever read. Goal setting is one of the most under used and over looked processes necessary to achieve any kind of real success.
According to Zig Ziglar, only 3% of Americans have actually take the time to put their goals on paper. He also compares not having written goals to shooting at a target with a blindfold on. So, in essence, if you do not have a goal or a place to go, your probably not going to move anywhere. I truly believe that this is the number one reason so many people fail in many home based businesses.
By creating clearly defined goals you are forcing yourself not to treat this as a hobby. If you are not going to write down and clearly define your goals for this business, then I implore you to stop reading this right now and ask for a refund. If you are not willing to create goals to reach then I can pretty much guarantee you will not make it in this business. This is about more than just money, I want to help you become a success story and it starts right here and right now, by defining and documenting your goals.
Great, your are still reading and that means I got your attention. In this next section we are going to talk about programming your brain.
*Become Conscious of your Subconscious
You probably don’t realize it, but your subconscious is what really controls your daily actions. You may think that you are consciously in control of every action, but in reality you will think and react according to your subconscious programming. This may be good or this may be very bad, it all depends what you have been feeding your subconscious mind.
Actions are directly related to your subconscious thinking and planting good goals in your subconscious mind will create positive actions that create the intended results. Think about it… You know those times when you know you need to do something, but you just cant seem to get yourself to do it? That is because you have probably been feeding negative and/or conflicting thoughts to your subconscious mind.
These behaviors negative or positive are commonly referred to as habits and they are products of a conditioning of the subconscious mind. This is great news because that means we can program new “positive” habits by training our subconscious mind.
This is not some bull that I am making up, this follows valid scientific reasoning that shows why goal setting works. It works because your subconscious mind guides your behavior and your daily conscious decisions will train your subconscious mind. This circle of events can create awesome positive outcomes or vicious destructive cycles. What goes in to the subconscious comes out in the form of behavior patterns.
To take advantage of this, we need to use our goals to train our subconscious mind, which in turn will create positive beneficial actions.
Its very important that we use our goals to train our subconscious and not other bad thoughts or ideas like “this will never work” or “I cant do this”, Because the more negative you think, the more you train your subconscious to believe it. Then your subconscious basically creates a behavior of disinterest and laziness and while you are not taking daily actions to build your business, it will quickly slip away from you and all of your hard work never pays off. This is a term I coined called “THE CYCLE OF FAILURE” which is the cycle we are going to break right now. Its important that you understand this, because you will need to realize when this happens to you and change your thinking to fix it.
From now on, every time you catch yourself thinking “I cant”, instantly change that to “I can”. Its really that simple. Again, anytime you are thinking something negative, instantly change it to its polar positive opposite and repeat it to yourself.
Examples:
Negatives:
I cant make a sale
I don’t think I am smart enough
I hate doing this activity
I’m scared to make this call
I don’t think it will work
Positives:
I can make a sale and I will make a sale!
I am smart enough I am just as smart as anyone else!
I love this activity because it will bring me closer to my goals!
I am not scared to make this call, he or she is only a person just like me!
This will work because I will do what it takes to make it work!
You can be successful, its all in your mind. If you quit you will never reach success.
You know the saying… “quitters never win and winners never quit” and it is sooo very true.
*Goal Setting Process
This next sections will tell you exactly how to write and use your goals on a daily basis. There is more to goal setting than just writing them down and putting them in a desk drawer. We are going to use those goals to change your subconscious thoughts.
Here are a few guidelines to use when setting your goals:
-Be very specific - in other words don’t just say I want to make a lot of money, set a dollar amount. Or maybe its not a dollar amount, maybe its the number of hours you would like to be able to spend with your kids. Whatever it is be specific, write out everything you can think of.
-Make sure its measurable - This means make sure the goal is something measurable so you can objectively measure your progress.
-Set Huge Goals - Don’t go in with low expectations, don’t be “realistic” because nothing great was ever achieved by being realistic. Dare to dream, set the goals you want not what you think you can get. Its ok to be scared by your goals, in fact if they are not scary then you need to revaluate them.
-set realistic deadlines - This one is important, because setting unrealistic deadlines can have a very negative effect on you if you do not reach those goals. There are no unrealistic goals, just unrealistic deadlines.
Now Set your goals:
First set your ultimate long term goal, this is the pinnacle of all of the goals and should be one that takes many years to achieve.
Now set your semi long term goals in the form of a 12 month goal and a 3 month goal. Again don’t just write something simple, follow the guidelines above and really write out what you want to have achieved by those deadlines.
Now we need to set the weekly and daily goals. These are the goals that are going to help train your subconscious and create positive beneficial habits. The daily ones especially are going to be the things you need to repeat in order to develop those habits.
Add the Emotional Factor
Now you need to figure out the “why’s”, meaning you need to figure out why you want reach these goals. What emotional reasons drive you to reach these goals. This is very helpful for those days when you just don’t feel like doing anything. The emotional reasoning will help to give you a real purpose to continue doing what you are supposed to be doing.
Clear Up Conflicts
This step is pretty simple, just look through your goals am make sure none are conflicting with one another.
Rewrite your goals as affirmations:
This is the most important step, so don’t skip this one or your efforts will surly suffer. Basically what you need to do now is write down each one of your goals as personal affirmations. Write them as if you have already achieved them and you are very happy about achieving them.
Example 1: I thank God that after only 3 months I now have earned 4 figures from my online ventures.
Example 2: I am so happy and thankful that I have completed my weekly goal of writing 1 article, 2 blog posts, 15 forum posts and 50 directory submissions.
Read your goals twice a day!
It has been proven by Psychologist that repetition is a very effective way of programming your subconscious mind. Think about it… any major company (Coke, Burger King, etc..) base their entire marketing campaign on his simple fact. That’s why those products are engraved into your subconscious mind. What just came to mind when you read the word coke? Red Can? someone holding it and drinking it?
Repetition works, plain and simple, so use it to your advantage to program yourself into a successful never say die individual. Read your affirmations every day twice a day. This means you will need to keep them close to you at all times. Make a copy and bring one to work, keep one in your wallet or purse or put them in the computer.
Now when you read these affirmations don’t just read them. You must read them with the faith that you are going to reach them and that you already have mentally. You can do this by visualizing them as already being achieved. Really take the minute or two and make mental pictures of yourself achieving that particular goal whatever it is.
Maybe its the day you reach your million dollar mark and the excitement you have as you login to your account and see the balance. Or maybe its that first sale and the joy you feel when that email comes in saying “you made a sale”. Whatever your goals are visualize them and create that good warm feeling when you do. Visualization is supper effective, this is why almost all Olympic caliber athletes use it on a daily basis to train.
What are your waiting for? Shut down your computer and set your goals immediately while all of this is fresh in your head. Its ok if they are not perfect yet, you should be continually setting new goals and revising old ones to fit in with your subconscious changes.
