I just attended a really nice conference call about social networking and wow, my head is spinning. For those of you who are not familiar with the term social networking, it is a semi-new phenomena that is taking over the internet. Myspace is prime example of a “Social Website” and there are many more like that. In fact Classmates.com was the first social website to hit the scene and many quickly followed.
Now what’s important about this social networking phenomena you may be asking? Its a brand new “MASSIVE” market, we need to diversify and work our way into these social websites. As marketers we cannot just focus on one thing, because if something happens to that one thing our income stops. Many marketers felt the pinch from the most recent Google adwords update where squeeze pages got priced up. That is what happens if you rely solely on one type or facet of marketing.
What do I do Adam? Well you can start by joining some of these social websites and getting involved. When I say get involved I don’t mean spam people with advertising because that simply doesn’t work. Again, these are “Social” websites, that means people are social, people are talking to one another, sharing stuff, trying to make friends.
Myspace is basically one big popularity contest, so you need to find the popular people and make friends with them and make your Myspace page look different and exciting like all the other users do. One good way to get a backlink to your business website from Myspace is to get some crazy/funny picture and post it in a popular persons comments section with an anchor html tag pointing back to your website. This way the comment doesn’t get deleted because its not a blatant advertisement.

There is another breed of social websites where you can post articles, blogs and other such information and the other members rate you and your post or they can bookmark your post. This can be some great publicity as well as helping your ranking in Google as Google gives weight to peoples ratings of articles and blog spots. These types of websites are called social bookmarking websites.

The above sites are great if you get bookmarked so don’t forget to get some friends to signup as well and bookmark your website and or ‘digg’ your article.
